Dr. Rao obtained his medical degree from Karnataka University, India. He received Internal Medicine residency training and chief residency at NY Methodist-Presbyterian Health Care System, Brooklyn, NY. He then completed Nephrology fellowship training at University of Texas Health Care Center, San Antonio, Texas. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He has also completed extra certification in clinical hypertension through American Board of Internal Medicine.

He joined Nephrology Hypertension Associates of CNY in 2003. He is the Medical Director of Dialysis Programs affiliated with St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. He is actively involved in several committees and the board at St. Joseph Hospital. He is also a member of review panel of NephSap which is a peer reviewed Nephrology journal. Also, he has gained recognition as a member of the Fellow of American Society of Nephrology which is a designation given to society members who have distinguished themselves through excellence in practice or research. He enjoys practicing all aspects of nephrology with particular interests in progression of chronic kidney disease, dialysis and Glomerular diseases.
